tiaki is launching soon. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming.
How to Create a Short Link – Short Addresses Everyone Remembers
You create a short link with a link shortener: paste in the long address, choose a custom slug like “summerparty,” and you get a short link that redirects to the long address. If you like, you also get a QR code and numbers on how often it was clicked. Here you’ll read what makes a great short link and where it makes the biggest difference.
What a short link is
A short link is a short address that points to a long one. Whoever opens it is instantly forwarded to the actual destination – a landing page, a form, a menu or your Google review window.
Long addresses full of characters, question marks and numbers are hard to type and look cluttered in a post. A short link like “…/s/cake”, on the other hand, fits on any flyer, can be read out loud and sticks in people’s minds.
How to create a short link: step by step
The process is the same with most services and takes less than a minute:
- Copy the long address the link should lead to.
- Paste it into the short link service.
- Choose a custom slug – short, meaningful and without special characters, like “fall” or “jobs”. Or let the service generate a code for you.
- Save the link and open it once yourself, ideally on your phone.
- Download the QR code if you need it and share the link wherever your customers will see it.
The custom slug: meaningful and easy to remember
The slug is the part after the slash – and that’s exactly what makes a short link personal. A meaningful slug tells people what to expect before they even click.
A few examples: “summerparty” for the invitation, “jobs” for your open positions, “menu” for the menu, “booking” for online appointments. Lowercase letters without accents or spaces are the easiest to type and read out loud.
From paper to phone with a QR code
A short link almost always comes with a QR code. It takes people from a printed notice, an invoice or the shop window straight to the destination with one glance through their phone camera.
Because the QR code contains the short link rather than the long address, it stays simple and easy to scan. Always add a sentence about what’s waiting behind the code – for example “Here’s our fall menu” – and test it with several phones before printing.
Click counts without cookies
A short link counts how often it was opened. So you can see whether the flyer in your shop brings more than the Instagram post, or which day went especially well.
These numbers don’t need cookies: what’s counted is the opening of the link itself. If you create a separate short link for each place – one for the flyer, one for your bio, one for the ad – you see exactly where the clicks come from.
Change the destination later – the code stays
One of the loveliest perks: with many short link services, you can change the destination without changing the link itself. The fall menu becomes the winter menu, the sign-up moves to a new page – and all your printed QR codes and shared links still lead to the right place.
For promotions with a fixed end, an expiration date is handy: the link expires on its own after the promotion, and you don’t have to think about it.
Where short links make the biggest difference
Wherever a long address would get in the way, a short link makes the path easy:
- Flyers, posters and notices – as a link and as a QR code.
- Invoices and delivery notes – for example with the link to your Google reviews.
- Business cards and email signatures.
- Posts and Stories on social networks.
- Messages via WhatsApp or email.
- Radio, talks and trade show booths – anywhere you read a link out loud.

What you want to know.
What is a short link?
A short address that forwards to a long one. It’s easier to share, type and remember – and prints nicely as a QR code.
Can I choose the slug myself?
With many services, yes. A meaningful custom slug like “summerparty” shows what to expect before anyone clicks.
Does a printed QR code keep working if the destination changes?
Yes, if the QR code contains a short link whose destination you can change. You only adjust the destination – the printed code stays the same and leads to the new place.
Do I need cookies for click counts?
No. A short link counts the opening of the link itself. Nothing has to be stored in the person’s browser for that.
How many short links should I create?
Ideally one per place and promotion – say one for the flyer and one for your bio. That way you see exactly where the clicks come from.
