The Best Time to Post on Instagram – How to Find Your Own

The best time to post on Instagram is when your own followers are most active – and Instagram shows you exactly when that is. In the free Insights of a professional account, you’ll find the times your followers are most active on Instagram under “Total followers.” There’s no single time that works for everyone: every audience has its own rhythm. Here’s how to find yours, test it and schedule your posts for precisely those moments.

Why your best time is unique

The web is full of lists promising “the best time to post.” But they always describe an average across very different accounts – and your followers aren’t average. A bakery’s customers might check their phones over their first coffee, a gym’s after work, an agency’s over lunch.

That’s good news: you don’t have to chase a one-size-fits-all rule. Your own numbers tell you when your people are around – and that’s exactly when you’ll reach them most beautifully.

How to find your most active times in Instagram Insights

Meta provides Insights for free. According to Meta, you need at least 100 followers to see details about your followers. Here’s how to get there:

  1. Switch to a professional account if you haven’t already – in Settings under Account type and tools.
  2. Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard or go straight to “Insights.”
  3. Choose “Total followers.”
  4. Scroll down to the times your followers are most active – there you can switch between days of the week and hours.
  5. Note the two or three strongest time slots for each day of the week. That’s your starting list.

Turning active times into your posting time

Your most active times show when your followers are around. Which one works best for your posts is something you’ll discover with a small test. Pick two or three time slots from your list and post in them alternately over a few weeks – with similar content, so the comparison stays fair.

Then take a look at the Insights for your posts. Among other things, Meta shows views, interactions and profile activity there, for a time range of up to the last 90 days. The time slot where your posts spark the most joy becomes your go-to time. And every few months, check in again – rhythms shift with the seasons, school holidays and new followers.

Your content helps pick the moment

Besides your numbers, it helps to look at the content itself. Some posts shine brightest when they fit into your followers’ day:

  • Today’s lunch special goes up before hunger kicks in – in the morning.
  • Show off the weekend cake while there’s still time to preorder – maybe as early as Wednesday or Thursday.
  • The before-and-after story of a new bathroom deserves time to sink in – say in the evening or on the weekend, if your Insights show activity then.
  • Special holiday opening hours go out a few days ahead, so everyone can plan around them.
  • The job post appears when people have time to daydream – check your numbers to see when that is for you.

A rhythm everyone looks forward to

Even more important than the perfect minute is a rhythm you can happily keep up. When your followers know the recipe of the week drops every Tuesday and a behind-the-scenes peek every Friday, they’ll stop by on purpose. How often is up to you – two posts a week made with joy are lovelier than five made under pressure.

A fixed weekly plan makes it easy: certain days for certain topics, plus your tested times. Stories round out the rhythm with spontaneous moments from everyday life.

Plan ahead, post right on time

Your best time is often exactly when your hands are full – at the counter in the morning, on the job site at noon, with a client in the evening. That’s why it pays to prepare posts in advance and publish them on a schedule. Meta offers Meta Business Suite for this, where you schedule posts and Stories for Instagram and Facebook with a date and time.

It’s most relaxing when you set aside one calm moment a week for planning: topics from your weekly plan, photos from everyday life, write the captions, set the times. Then your presence runs on its own while you take care of your customers.
