Link in bio – how your profile leads straight to your business

“Link in bio” means the link in your profile description on Instagram or TikTok – on Instagram, it’s the most important place where visitors reach your site with a single tap, since links in post captions aren’t clickable there. Many businesses put their own bio page there with several buttons: appointments, menu, directions, jobs.

What “link in bio” means

Your bio is the short text at the top of your profile. You can add links below it. When a post says “link in bio,” it means: “Tap our profile – you’ll find the link there.” The detour is necessary because Instagram doesn’t make links in the caption under a post clickable – they just show up as plain text.

Since April 2023, Instagram has allowed up to five links in your bio. Only the first one is shown directly, though; the rest are tucked away behind an extra tap. That’s why many businesses put their own bio page in first place – one that neatly brings together everything important.

Why your own bio page makes such a difference

A bio page is a small, mobile-friendly page with several buttons stacked one below the other. It’s the signpost between your profile and everything customers actually want to do: call, book an appointment, see the menu, find their way to you.

The advantage: you change the page, not your bio. When next week’s promotion changes, you swap one button – and every older post that says “link in bio” still leads to the right place.

Make sure the page loads quickly on a phone and that the buttons are big enough to tap. Most people coming from Instagram are holding their phone in one hand – and may already be carrying a shopping bag in the other.

Your bio text: the lines above the link

The link only works if the lines above it spark curiosity. In just a few words, your bio should say who you are, where you are and what people get from you – and why they should tap the link.

An example for a trade business: “Complete bathroom remodels in Paderborn and the surrounding area · Since 1987 · Request a quote via the link.” For a bakery: “Handmade bread from the old town · Daily from 6 a.m. · Preorder cakes via the link.” Place, service and a clear invitation – that’s all it takes.

What belongs on your bio page

Less is more. Five to seven buttons are almost always enough. These building blocks have proven themselves:

  • The most important action at the very top: book an appointment, call or preorder.
  • Your current promotion: the deal of the week, a job ad, a new product.
  • Your website and your Google Business Profile with directions and opening hours.
  • Contact: phone, WhatsApp or email – whichever you answer fastest.
  • Reviews: a button that says “Tell others what it was like,” leading straight to your Google review link.
  • Legal notice (Impressum) and privacy policy – even a small page needs them when it’s used for business.

Examples for businesses

Here’s what a bio page could look like – as an example to adapt to your business:

  • Bakery: Preorder cakes · Deal of the week · Opening hours and directions · We’re hiring (sales) · Write a review
  • Trade business: Request a quote · Before/after projects · Apprenticeships with us · Call emergency service · Write a review
  • Medical practice: Book an appointment online · Order a prescription · Directions and parking · Vacation closures · Meet the team
  • Pharmacy: Preorder · Current promotions · After-hours pharmacies nearby · Opening hours · Contact
  • Shop: New arrivals · Request a gift voucher · Opening hours · Instagram deal of the week · Write a review

How to set up the link in your bio

On Instagram, you do this in the app:

  1. Open your profile and tap “Edit profile.”
  2. Choose “Links” and then “Add external link.”
  3. Paste the address of your bio page and give it a short title.
  4. Drag the link to the first position so it’s visible directly on your profile.
  5. Tap it once yourself and check that everything loads and every button works.

Small tricks that make a big difference

In every post that points to something, say specifically what’s waiting behind the link: “You’ll find this week’s menu via the link in our profile.” That’s clearer than a bare “link in bio.”

In Stories, also use the link sticker – there, links can be tapped directly. And check now and then which buttons people actually use: whatever nobody taps can go, so the important things get more room.

Using your bio page beyond Instagram

A good bio page is more than an add-on to your Instagram profile. You can use the same link on Facebook and TikTok, in your email signature and in WhatsApp messages. Printed as a QR code, it takes customers straight from your shop window, your shopping bags or your company van to your most important buttons.

That gives you one single place to keep up to date – and every path, online and on paper, leads there.

Questions

What you want to know.

How many links can I put in my Instagram bio?

Since April 2023, Instagram has allowed up to five links in your bio. Only the first one is directly visible, though – which is why a bio page with all your important buttons is worth putting there.

Why can’t you click links in Instagram posts?

Instagram doesn’t make links in post captions clickable; they appear as plain text. That’s why posts point to the link in the bio.

What’s the difference between a bio link and a bio page?

The bio link is the link in your profile. The bio page is the page it leads to – with several buttons for appointments, offers, contact and more.

Does a bio page need a legal notice (Impressum)?

If you use it for business, a legal notice (Impressum) and privacy information belong on it. The easiest way is to link to the corresponding pages on your website.

Can I also use the link in my bio for promotions?

Yes. It’s best to keep your bio page as your first link permanently and swap only the promotion button there. That way, older posts that mention the link still point to the right place.
